Grocery Saving Tips

Small local markets have great deals.

I am all about saving money on groceries. Before I go shopping I always check the weekly flyers from the two major chains in my area, and I also check the ads for a small Italian Market in the area. I have found that often I get the most for my money from the small Italian Market. For example today I purchased 5-1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, 4 large slabs of pork baby back ribs, 2 whole pineapples (already cored), 2 dozen jumbo eggs, 1 whole watermelon, 2 huge bunches of broccoli some red peppers, squash, zucchini and onions - total bill 52.00!! I can easily make 2 weeks worth of dinners for 2 from what I bought.

So check around your area, often the "little" store is a better bargain. Have a favorite store or shopping tip, please share.

‘Cash-For-Clunkers’ Vote May Open Path for $4,500 U.S. Vouchers

By John Hughes

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. consumers may be able to collect as much as $4,500 by September on vehicle trade-ins under “cash-for-clunkers” legislation up for a vote in the House today.

The provision, scheduled to be taken up by the Senate after the House vote, gives vouchers to encourage Americans to swap older cars and light trucks for new, more fuel-efficient models. Automakers, whose U.S. sales fell 34 percent in May, support the plan as a way to get consumers into showrooms.

Approval of the $1 billion subsidy is likely because House and Senate negotiators agreed to incorporate the provision into a broader measure to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Consumers could start getting rebates by Sept. 1, after the Obama administration sets rules for the process, said Charles Territo of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

“With auto sales hovering near record lows, it’s extremely important that Congress help,” said Territo, a spokesman for the Washington-based trade group, in an interview yesterday. “Many consumers have been waiting to purchase a new vehicle on the outcome of this legislation.”

Automakers have been pressing for the legislation all year to revive sales at their lowest since the early 1980s. “It is critically important,” said Ford spokeswoman Christin Baker, citing the “tough” economy and “weary” consumers.

Similar programs in countries such as Germany have boosted sales by as much as 40 percent, said Kerry Christopher, a GM spokesman. The U.S. program “will give customers a great encouragement to get back into the market,” he said in an e- mail.

New autos in the U.S. sold at an annual rate of 9.9 million units in May, the fifth straight month sales failed to cross 10 million, according to Autodata Corp., an industry research firm based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. The rate was 14.2 million in May 2008 and averaged 16.8 million this decade through 2007.

Sales Forecast

The “clunkers” program may add to quarterly sales at an annualized rate of 1 million to 1.5 million vehicles, Brian Johnson, a Barclays Capital analyst, said in a June 12 report.

Consumers would get $4,500 vouchers if the new car they are buying gets 10 miles-a-gallon better gas mileage than the model they are trading in. For light trucks, the improvement must be 5 mpg better than the older model.

For a $3,500 voucher, the improvement for cars must be 4 mpg or better, and for light trucks, 2 mpg. The trade-in vehicle must be no older than a 1984 model and get 18 mpg or less in combined city/highway fuel economy.

New passenger cars purchased with the vouchers must get at least 22 mpg in city/highway fuel economy, and light trucks must get at least 18 mpg. Domestic as well as foreign models sold in the U.S. qualify.

Added Funding

“The important thing is to get the program under way so we can start getting the benefits,” Representative Betty Sutton, an Ohio Democrat who crafted the plan, told reporters June 12.

An earlier version of the plan approved by the House on June 9 called for a $4 billion-a-year annual program to spur sales of 1 million vehicles. The $1 billion in the war bill will run out with the close of the fiscal year Sept. 30, meaning Congress will have to act again to fund the program in fiscal 2010.

Johnson said in his note he considers it likely the program will get the additional $3 billion in 2010, given President Barack Obama’s endorsement of the concept.

Senator Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican and early backer of Senate approval of the plan, defected last week when he learned the plan would no longer be funded with part of the $787 billion stimulus legislation passed in February.

Deficit Spending

“The House has decided to fund the legislation through deficit spending,” Brownback said in a June 11 statement. “I will not support the plan.”

In the Senate, the cash-for-clunkers provision is sponsored by Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, and has the backing of Richard Durbin of Illinois, the chamber’s No. 2 Democrat.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat who has backed the idea, has said the version of the proposal nearing passage “doesn’t make much sense” because only small improvements in fuel efficiency would be needed to qualify for a voucher.

The program would “allow a guzzler to be junked and a new guzzler purchased, essentially reimbursed by the taxpayers,” Feinstein said.

New GI Bill greatly expands education benefits for veterans of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan

New GI Bill greatly expands education benefits for veterans of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan
By Scott Travis | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
June 15, 2009

They spent years fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now many Florida veterans will have a new mission: to earn a college degree.

A new federal GI Bill, which takes effect in August, will pay college and living expenses for those who have served in the military since Sept. 11, 2001, including military reservists and National Guard members.

And a new state program, "Boots to Books," provides support for those veterans by offering an online clearinghouse of information at www.flbootstobooks.org.

The new GI Bill greatly expands benefits offered under the current Montgomery GI Bill, established in 1985 as a peacetime bill and which pays $1,320 a month.

The new one picks up full tuition and fees for a public university or community college. It also allots $1,000 a year for books and supplies, and a monthly housing stipend of $1,200 to $2,500. The benefits are good for 36 months for those who have served for at least 36 months.

Many private schools, including Nova Southeastern University in Davie and Northwood University in West Palm Beach, say they plan to participate in a "Yellow Ribbon Program" in which they help defray some or all of any extra costs with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

"The new GI Bill basically takes away any excuse not to pursue higher education," said Derek Hollcroft, 23, an Army veteran and sophomore at Broward College.

There were 36,088 veterans enrolled in Florida colleges in 2007-08, up from 33,963 the year before. State officials predict those numbers could double or even triple during the next few years as Florida's 160,000 eligible post- 9/11 veterans take advantage of the new benefits.

While many universities and community colleges have been battling crowding, they say they welcome these new students.

"Veterans are some of the most equipped students we'll ever get," said Randy Goin, chief of staff at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, which has 300 veterans out of 26,000 students. "They have lived lives and done things a lot of students haven't experienced."

At Palm Beach Community College, about 300 of the 30,000 students are veterans and Patty Anderson, vice president for student services, said she expects that to double this fall.

She said the veterans may create a need for mental health services.

Broward College has 533 veterans and expects an increase of 20 to 25 percent more, said Marcia Conliffe, associate vice president. The college is hiring a designated veterans affairs coordinator to help them.

Many students are still unaware these benefits exist, said Rivka Spiro, a public relations specialist at Broward College. She said several veterans at Broward College's graduation who were planning to transfer to four-year universities were shocked when she told them about the new GI Bill.

"You can get free tuition, books and living expenses. It's like winning the lottery, and none of them knew about it," she said.

Hollcroft, who served in South Korea and Iraq, is starting a Student Veterans of America chapter on Broward College. He said one of his goals is to increase awareness of the benefits.

Steve Lopez, 24, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007, plans to study civil engineering at the University of Florida this fall. He said he intends to take advantage of the benefits.

"It's helping me out a lot," he said. "After four years and two tours of Iraq, the least the government can do is pay my way through school. It's making it a lot easier to achieve dream of getting a degree."

Copy Paste problem on Blogger Solved

Being a newbie to Blogger, I was unable to cut and paste while creating a new post for my blog. I was further stumped when from a friends computer, she was able to cut and paste onto on my blog from her computer. I knew then that it must be something in my settings. After some trial and error I pulled up "create new post" and to the right of the "Title bar" I clicked on "Edit HTML" which was highlighted in white. As soon as I clicked the box the color changed to tan. I was then able to copy and paste with no problem.

The Perfect Storm Top 3 drivers of the new entrepreneurial revolution

The top 3 drivers of the new entrepreneurial revolution are, first the economy, second the shift to online shopping and third the environmental movement. Let us take a look at them:

The Economy

Due to the economy more people are looking for ways to save and or supplement their incomes. Here is an interesting article from USA Today - USA Today Reports Direct Sales Place to Be http://tinyurl.com/nnnyzs. This is a great way to earn extra income in your spare time, and there are many direct sales companies to choose from. I have tried a few of them myself such as MaryKay and Shaklee. Now, these are great companies with nationally recognized brand identification, but I have found them lacking in 3 important areas:

1. Product diversification is limited to one area of business such as only beauty, nutrition etc.

2. Expense of having to purchase and store inventory for sale (what to do with discontinued products?)

3. Expense of sales materials such as samples (and sample cases), product catalogs (usually seasonal and always for new product lines). These expenses are recurring.

Online Shopping

Who would have thought just a few years ago that the popularity of online shopping would explode as it has. But today's consumer is very time conscious and cost conscious. A few benefits of Online Shopping are:

1. Shop whenever you want for whatever you want 24 hours a day from the comfort of your home. No more running around from store to store.

2. Online shopping saves money. Retailers offer great discounts for shopping online. You can almost always find a deal with free shipping, and depending on your State you save by not paying Sales Tax.

3. Save money on gas (plus wear & tear on your auto) or save on the cost of other transportation.

The Environmental Movement

Today we have all become aware of the importance of "going green". A few ways we can help save our planet are:

1. Saving energy - cut down on driving, buy energy efficient products, turn off lights, plant trees to help shade your home & clean the air. (note these will also save money in the long run)

2. Change to using non toxic products such as cleansers, detergents, personal care products, pesticides, organic fertilizers to name a few.

3. Purchase "natural products" instead of synthetics in home design, personal care, clothing, pet products etc.

You may by now be wondering why I titled this blog The perfect Storm. Because of the 3 main drivers discussed above, a new and innovative business model has taken the Direct Sales, MLM and Affiliate market by storm. It combines the best of all three by giving you the opportunity to own an Internet business that pays us up to 30% Cash Back to shop online from all the retailers that we already shop from (over 850 & growing) and lets us do our part to help make our world a better place environmentally by buying products from green conscious companies (soon to be over 300 & growing). Think of it.. you can Save money shopping online, from all the retailers you already shop from, help the environment shopping from green conscious companies and Earn Cash back.

Presenting ....... ShoptoEarn and ShoptoEarth.
